FAQs

What is the PTA?

The Parent Teacher Association (PTA) is a national non-profit organization that advocates for families
and children at the local, state, and national levels. The MAS PTA is a local unit and provides a direct way for you to become involved in the school as a partner in your child’s education and in the schools itself.

Why should I be a paid member?

The MAS PTA is a non-profit, all-volunteer association of parents, teachers and students from MAS and operates as a unit of a larger organization at the state level. In order to remain part of the New York State PTA and the National PTA, in addition to remaining a 501(c)3 non-profit in good standing, we must have paid members. Being recognized as an official PTA helps us access training, technical and legal support, grants, and more - see below!

How does MAS benefit from the PTA?

National and NYS PTA provide MAS PTA with training, technical and legal support, insurance, education, grants and more. Furthermore, the PTA has millions of members nationwide allowing PTA
to influence policy and decision makers at local, state and national level advocating for all children and families. Visit nyspta.org/home/advocacy to learn more.

Where do my dues go?

Dues are $10 for an individual and $30 for a family. Dues cover basic operating expenses. MAS
PTA must pay $4 per member ($2.25 to National PTA and $1.75 to State PTA) and flat fee of $300 to WP PTA. The remaining goes towards the MAS PTA’s operating costs, including bank account maintenance, insurance, meeting supplies, website and newsletter maintenance fees, and more.

What is NOT covered by paid memberships?

MAS PTA sponsored programming such as assemblies, field trips, classroom grants and more are made possible by all MAS families giving their time, skills and financial donations.
